Zusammenfassung: The condition and damage of a naturally aged alum-tawed leather binding were documented, analysed and a concept for the stabilising preservation of the leather was developed in several steps.
The feasibility of the concept was tested by practical tests on samples of new and aged leather. A suitable adhesive formulation and various Japanese papers were determined for the planned implementation.
The aged leather was examined for its state of preservation and possible negative changes due to restorative interventions, in order to rule out the occurrence of new damage due to the planned treatment.
The planned work steps could be successfully implemented on the exemplary binding examined without causing any damage to the leather.
In practice, the system conceived of using a tuck-in flap to secure loosely hanging leather areas on the spine proved to be a stable yet flexible securing measure. All stabilization measures carried out achieved the desired results and can therefore be recommended for the treatment of further bindings.
