Zusammenfassung: Is this condition too good for an historic object? To investigate this matter for a small winged altar in the chapel of castle Eltz, Germany, the following Master-Thesis will discuss this dating. Motivation for the examination of the altar is the lack of ageing signs, questionable for a piece meant to be late-Gothic with no documented provenance. In addition, the altar reveals certain elements from the 19th century. This raises the question whether the altar is well preserved or whether it might be only neo- Gothic. The dating will be based on the examination of its construction, its carving- and painting techniques; stylistic aspects are also taken into consideration.
A second emphasis of the thesis will focus on the assessment of a treatment proposal to conserve and preserve the altar. The proposal will concentrate on the dealing with a previous, unprofessional restoration treatment, when wax was applied to consolidate flaking paint layers. Based on the discussion of this wax treatment the conservation and its consequences for the aesthetic appearance and preservation of the object, a concept for the wax removal will be developed. Furthermore, a treatment to consolidate the hydrophobic surface and to close lost areas will be introduced. The discussed proposal to conserve the altar piece will be implemented in action in the course of the thesis.
