Zusammenfassung: | Studies on the penetration properties of thermoplastic and thermosetting resins as well as MHCE in basswood charcoal were carried out in the context of the conservation of a fire‐damaged altar sculpture, dated in the beginning of the 15th century and made from basswood. In addition, the physical properties of basswood charcoal as well as the properties of the consolidating fluids, like e.g. porosity and viscosity, were determined in relation to the said parameters. The penetration properties of the tested consolidating fluids were confirmed as being independent from the polarity of the solvent. The main transport mechanism is the capillary action which takes place mostly in the former vessels of the basswood. The remnants of the pyrolysis products in the coal were extracted and analysed according to their solvent specific solvability, in order to determine their ability to alternate the physical properties and to affect the aging process of the tested artificial resins. |
