Zusammenfassung: This diploma thesis deals with the examination, documentation and the conservation of the 1964 light kinetic artwork strutturazione cinevisuale abitabile by Gianni Colombo.
The switching elements installed to control the sequencing of the light were limited in their function due to usage and deterioration which resulted in malfunctioning. Overall the material degradation had weakened the construction of the framework and caused changes to the light sequencing to an extend that the artist visual intent and concept is jeopardized. Based on research into material technology and artist’s conception including an interview with a former assistant of Gianni Colombo a conservation concept was developed and exemplarily carried out. The switching elements were repaired, steel sheets repositioned, remains of former restorations removed, original adhesive tapes consolidated and a surface cleaning was performed.
The switching mechanism and sequence was examined and recorded by using a programmed microcontroller. Finally recommendations for preservation strategies, storage, packing, transport and presentation have been developed.
