Zusammenfassung: | The thesis examines possible conservation methods to preserve the multiple Bleeding heart with ribbons and a movie star (number 36 of 48) created by Jim Dine, dated 1968. The artwork, which will be presented in a hanging position, consists of a wooden base surrounded by a white self-adhesive tape, as well as a print on paper with additional collage and a printed cover made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The main focus of this thesis is to find suitable methods and materials to bond or fill several breaks and cracks in the cover. After evaluating relevant literature the two-part epoxy resin HXTAL NYL-1 and the poly(isobutyl methacrylate) Degalan® PQ 611 N are selected to develop a suitable bonding strategy. As an experimental part, the problem of void formation in solvent-based adhesives is examined in detail, using Degalan® PQ 611 N in isooctane to fill cracks, followed by developing a method to minimize or ideally prevent the formation of those voids. Finally this method is used to fill selected breaks and cracks in the PMMA cover. In addition, a new mounting system was designed to improve the installation of the artwork and secure fragile parts of the white self-adhesive tape. Furthermore, an intermediate layer was inserted between the wooden base and the print to reduce damage and discoloration to the paper due to acid migration. |
