Christiane Adolf: Heliogen Blue and Heliogen Green. Do copper phthalocyanine pigments work as time markers? Zurück

Zusammenfassung: (Copper-)Phthalocyanines are a synthetic organic group of pigments, whose first representatives were introduced to the German market in 1936 respectively in 1938 in the form of ®Heliogen Blue B and ®Heliogen Green G. Considering the pigment historical context, it becomes obvious that they had to liberate themselves first from the prejudices against the non-light-resistant tar dyes, which were still manufactured into artist’s colours in the beginning of the 20th century. After a chemical characterization of this substance category, the author tries to demarcate its earliest application in artist’s pigments respectively in artist’s colours from different perspectives. Therefore research was conducted in contemporary art- and painting-technological literary sources as well as in regard to the production of colours – particularly based on the Colour Index International and a survey among selected manufacturers of artist’s colours. Those data are complemented through an insight into the state-of-the-art of the earliest available analytical proof from samples of paintings at the Doerner Institute. The research results show that it has to be assumed that the Phthalocyanines were used already shortly after their introduction to the market.
