Zusammenfassung: | Images of the Gethsemane scene were an important and popular motif, especially in Southern Germany during the 15th and the beginning 16th century. Main features of the sculpture group at St. Jacob's Church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber include the monumental and vivid portrayal of the scene, the provenance of the figures in two different periods of time with the use of two varying local types of Keuper sandstone, as well as the existence of remaining polychrome paintings. The investigations conducted dealt with the history of the Gethsemane sculpture group, its inventory and damages. The damage difficulties on the stone as well as on the polychrome paintings led to the development of a comprehensive conservation and restoration concept for the figures. |
