Horsehair and its basic structure as hair are well known to textile conservators, but knowledge of its specific attributes, possibilities of identification by microscopy, its use and conservation are often less well understood. This paper offers basic information and data demonstrating some of the distinctive characteristics of horsehair, as well as microscopic photograhps of aged examples on which fibre damages are analysed. Furthermore there are tests done to examine different conservation techniques and their results are discussed.
