Zusammenfassung: | The Chinese hanging scroll FAH 22/66, ca. 1892, of the Historical Archive Krupp exhibited numerous horizontal creases and tears as well as a loss of the lower part. A review of the history and function of Chinese scroll mounting is given and ethical conflicts are explained. Weaknesses of the scroll construction and possible causes of the damages are described. A fibre analysis of the Chinese papers and textiles was carried out in addition to an analysis of the adhesives and gilding. Several techniques for tear repairs were tested, before treatment was carried out. Only minor treatment was necessary, mainly due to the plane storage option. Reconstruction of the lower part of the scroll was undertaken which included retouching on lined silk. The conservation treatment presented an alternative to a complete remounting of the scroll. |
