Zusammenfassung: Apart of problems of preservation and storage large-sized medieval textiles represent a great challenge for exhibition organization. The so called Chape de Charlemagne is kept in the treasure-house of the Cathedral Saint-Etienne in Metz and quite unknown. The mantle is made of a red plain silk fabric and embroidered with metal threads and silk in surface couching technique. He has been manufactured in Palermo and is dated to the early 13th century. Frederic II is thought to have commissioned it. In preparation for an exhibition the Chape has been closely studied and analysed. The surface has been carefully micro-vacuumed and a new panel for display has been prepared. Conservation treatment could be reduced to a minimum, for the mantle has been displayed in a horizontal position.
