Zusammenfassung: The Wayang Kulit shadow play belongs to the most tradition-rich und most important dramatic art forms of Indonesia. The inventory of the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna includes 253 shadow puppets and thus represents one of the most extensive collections in Europe.
The conceptualisation for the conservation of the Wayang Kulit puppets as well as their storage and presentation is based on a comprehensive conservational inventory and condition analysis. The exemplary conservation was performed on a selection of five puppets. The conservational measures involve dry cleaning, flattening, paintlayer consolidation, as well as securing gluing of breaks. The main focus of preventive conservation is on the design of an object-specific presentation taking into account the conservational demands of the exhibition lighting.
