Zusammenfassung: The Minerva-Mosaic, a 5 m high Italian glass mosaic, was first presented at the World Exhibition in Vienna 1873. Today it adorns the front of the linking block between the University of Applied Arts and the MAK–Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. Before developing a conservation and restoration concept, detailed information about the history of the object and the historical production techniques of mosaics and metal-leaf tesserae had to be gathered and studied. The main field of the thesis is the occupation with the condition of the glassmosaic and the existing damage phenomena in general. Various methods of reconstructing the loss of the metal-leaf tesserae from the background by regilding in combination with protective coating were tested in a series of experiments. The results will be considered in the preservation concept and its practical realization.
