Zusammenfassung: | The wallpaintings in St. Margareth’s Chapel of the Constance Minster are recognised as pioneering late gothic works in the Lake Constance area. In technical terms they show a close affinity to contemporary panel painting, painted in secco technique on lime plaster using varying binding media (oil, tempera, and presumably animal glue). Aside from the range of pigments usually employed in the Middle Ages, lake pigments were also used. The paintings are additionally dressed in relief brocade and other applications. The combination of an unsuitable technique and dampness lead to a dilapidation, especially to pigment alterations of the lead white and red lead to lead sulphate. After examining the present condition, this diploma thesis will attempt to uncover the causes and to illustrate the dynamics of the damage. Finally this paper will attempt to provide initial suggestions for the conservation treatment. |
