| Zusammenfassung: | The reinstallation of an historic furnishing in a modernised church interior raises diverse questions for both art historians and conservators. The Neo-Romanesque, carved and framed, polychrome altarpiece from St. Mark’s Church in Hanover was dismantled and stored in the 1960s. Only the crucifix has since been displayed in the choir. In recent years, the church congregation’s desire for the return of the altarpiece has grown significantly. After a provisional setup in 2019, the altarpiece was again dismantled and returned to storage as individual components. After an art historical characterisation, a technical examination and a condition report, two different presentation concepts and a storage concept are developed for the object. From a conservator’s point of view, the complete reinstallation at the original location in the choir provides the best conditions for the long-term preservation of the altarpiece. |
