Zusammenfassung: The subject of this diploma thesis is the artwork Modell: Zwischendeck by German artist Dorothee Golz from 1995. The hanging polygonal artwork with horizontally protruding mushroom-like elements consists of a white silicone rubber and green floral foam (Phenol-formaldehyde, PF). The delicate floral foam on the surface of the object shows not only mechanically induced damages but also a color change which is particularly noticeable in the exposed areas. The silicone rubber shows tears and losses which appeared as a result of deformation and fatigue. The recording of these phenomena, their causes and influencing factors, form a central theme of this diploma thesis.
Material analysis, extensive material research and an interview with the artist have contributed to the understanding of the manufacturing technique, the artist’s intent and the material-inherent properties of the used materials.
Within the scope of this work a special support structure was designed to erect and relieve the elastic silicone elements as well as for the repositioning of the tear surfaces. The support structure should also serve to bond the tears on the object and for long-term storage. Furthermore, research was carried out to find an adhesive suitable for silicone rubber to ensure the long-term preservation and stability of this artwork. A number of 1-component silicon adhesives were thus tested on silicone rubber samples.
