Zusammenfassung: This diploma thesis deals with the conservation of folkloric belts in the collection of the Tyrolean
folk art museum on the example of ten representative objects. The cultural and historical
background and the development of types and decorative techniques are presented. Through
scientific investigations the materials of the individual belts are clarified and characteristics of
the object group are documented by highlighting common features. The description and
interpretation of aging mechanisms and damage patterns allow the identification of essential
damage factors and the classification of the individual objects in condition categories. Traces
of use, as well as previous adaptations and repairs are considered. Based on the findings
regarding the material characteristics of the objects and nature of damages, measures for
conservation are discussed. A concept is formulated and carried out on the ten selected
objects. In addition to coordinated cleaning measures and the removal of secondary covers
and corrosion products, the degreasing, reshaping and consolidation of the leather belts is
required. The different elements of the decoration are getting secured, open seams closed and
holes backed with support-material. The concept of measures is completed by considerations
on storage and presentation.
