Overview:

Abstract: Protective coatings play a key role in both the aesthetic appearance and the preservation of furniture surfaces, safeguarding them against mechanical, environmental, and chemical influences. This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the fire-damaged cabinet FAS M 2149 from Schloss Fasanerie in Fulda, whose transparent coating layer has been partially covered with soot and significantly degraded following a fire in 1967. Previous preliminary tests showed that soot removal while preserving the original coating was only partially successful. The aim of this study was the comparative evaluation of historical and synthetic coating systems with regard to their applicability, color and gloss stability, aging behavior, mechanical resistance, and reversibility, in order to derive a well-founded conservation recommendation for the object. Nine coating systems were reconstructed, applied to test samples, and subjected to artificial humidity-induced and photochemical aging. Their performance was assessed through macroscopic and microscopic observations, as well as instrumental color and gloss measurements, abrasion tests, and solubility analyses. None of the investigated systems fulfilled all criteria equally, and in some cases significant differences in material properties were observed. In the event that removal of the original coating becomes necessary, a spirit varnish based on Siddon proved to be the most suitable option overall. If the historic natural resin coating can largely be preserved, an additional protective layer based on Regalrez 1126 appears promising due to its distinct solubility behavior, although its long-term mechanical performance requires further investigation. The results partially address an identified research gap, provide a basis for decision-making in this specific case, and contribute to the development of future practice-oriented approaches in furniture conservation.
