Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the art-technological examination, conservation, and restoration of the polychrome wooden sculpture “Mary with Child” from the church in Altenbach, dated around 1500. The aim of the thesis is to examine the material structure and state of preservation of the sculpture, as well as to evaluate and remove historical restoration measures from the 20th century. The art-technological examination was carried out on the basis of a visual assessment, microscopic analyses, and material science methods to record the paint layer set-up and the materials used. On this basis, a conservation and restoration concept was developed and implemented. The measures carried out included the consolidation of damaged areas of the paint layer and the removal of later alterations.
