Johann Hinterstoisser: The consolidation of charred oak wood in the church of Povergina, Romania Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Following a fire in 2015, the wooden church in Povergina, Romania, is being rebuilt as part of a project organised by the Biserici Înlemnite organisation. As the continued use of the wooden church is one of the project´s goals the stabilisation of the charred surfaces is necessary, as even small mechanical stresses have already led to the loss of the charcoal layer. Due to the special environmental conditions, it is not possible to transfer results of previous theses directly.
In addition, it became apparent that a suitable evaluation system needed to be found that assesses the effect of consolidation based on measurable variables. In addition to the appearance, these variables include stability as a function of hardness and abrasion resistance. Based on these measurement parameters, an experiment was developed to investigate various consolidation media and their effect on charcoal. One focus of the investigation was on the production of uniform sample material and comparable measurements, for which existing measurement methods were adapted. In addition, the influence of increased temperature and humidity on the consolidated material was also investigated. As a side note, in addition to tests on the consolidation of charcoal, experiments were also carried out on the relationship between concentration and an increase of stability.
