| Abstract: | Hans Makart (1840–1884) is regarded as an exemplary representative of an instable painting technique typical to the 19th century, whose works are primarily associated with resulting damages. However, the sources on the artists actual painting approach are weak and well-founded art-technological studies have been largely lacking to date. In a detailed examination of 39 paintings from the Salzburg Museum, Makart‘s painting technique was reevaluated. The examination primarily consisted of a macroscopic examination of all works, supported by art-technological analyses (X-ray fluorescence analysis, X-ray radiography) of selected paintings. It involved a systematic inspection of the support, the ground, the underdrawing, the application of colour and changes to the paint layer in order to gain an understanding of Makart‘s working method and the composition of his paintings. The results were presented both comparatively and in a separate catalogue section for each individual painting. They enable a nuanced reassessment of Makart‘s painting approach and make a significant contribution to the understanding of his artistic practice. Furthermore, they contribute to the art-technological characterisation of the 19th century as a whole and form a fundamental basis for the conservation of Makart‘s works as well as for further research. |
