| Abstract: | Abstract Parchment, owing to its durability, has long served as a principal material for written cultural artefacts and is distinguished by a remarkable diversity of colour nuances and surface characteristics. Its coloration is influenced by numerous factors, including the species of animal as well as the methods of manufacture and subsequent treatment. The processing as grain parchment, velouté finishing, and natural ageing processes further contribute to the material’s chromatic and physical properties. The aim of this study is to systematically record and analyse the causes and manifestations of colour variability in parchment. In addition to a colorimetric investigation, which provides objective data for the classification of colour variants, the evaluation is based on selected historical samples from the Baden-Württemberg State Archives. The results serve as a foundation for developing restoration infills using Japanese paper laminate, with the goal of achieving optimal chromatic integration with the original material. |
