| Zusammenfassung: | This master’s thesis is dedicated to the study of upholstery in historic seating furniture within a museum context. The focus lies on a minimally invasive approach, aimed at creating a well-founded and reflective basis for the preservation of historic upholstery. Methodologically, the work is based on a combination of literature research and the practical examination of two armchairs from the Historisches Museum Blumenstein in Solothurn. Non-invasive and selected minimally invasive methods were applied, including visual and tactile examination, X-radiography, fiber analysis, and radiocarbon dating. The findings allow for a chronological classification of the upholstery as well as an assessment of the preserved condition. They demonstrate how differentiated technological features can provide insights into authenticity and preservation. The results culminate in a practice-oriented guideline for the systematic application of appropriate investigative methods and evaluation criteria. This guideline offers conservators a valuable tool for the museum and heritage context and contributes to a deeper professional engagement with an area of conservation and restoration that has often been overlooked. |
