| Zusammenfassung: | This diploma thesis focuses on the conservation and restoration of a green-painted writing desk manufactured between 1917 and 1937 by the company "Haus & Garten" under the direction of designer Josef Frank. The work focuses on a detailed examination of the desk, documenting its construction, materials, and state of preservation. Technological analyses, including cross-sections and FTIR examinations, X-rays, and cross-section staining, enabled the characterization of the paint structure as well as the original and reworked surfaces. Particular attention is paid to preserving and aesthetically matching the current paintwork to maintain the original character of the writing desk. This includes measures such as consolidating the paint layers, thorough dry cleaning, and the removal of dirt deposits. Furthermore, the thesis presents retouching methods tailored to material compatibility and visual unity to aesthetically stabilize the writing desk and ensure its continued museum display. Comparative analyses with similar pieces of furniture from the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna and the Imperial Furniture Collection illuminate the historical design and history of the writing desk. |
