Zusammenfassung: This master’s thesis examines the painting „Triumph of Galathea“ from the art collection of the Georg-August-University in Göttingen from both an art historical and a technological perspective. The presumably Flemish piece from the first half of the 17th century shows clear compositional parallels to other contemporary paintings attributet to Antwerp artists. Therefore it is to be discussed in an art-historical context as a possible „pasticcio“. The aim of this work is to document the materiality, technique and state of preservation according to current scientifical standards for conservation and restoration of art. Further a well-founded concept for conservational treatment based on the research results will be developed.
Over the course of the research, minimal invasive methods such as multispectral photography, microscopic analyses and the examination of selectively taken microscopic samples were used. The results provided a detailed insight into the structural and materialistic properties of the painting and decorative frame, as well as findings about historical changes and ist current condition. Digital image processing also made it possible to better read the signature on the painting, further suggesting an attribution to the artist Pauwels Casteels. Based on the technological examination, an appropriat concept for treatment for the painting and decorative frame could be developed.
This Thesis provides an important basis for future conservation and restoration measures to the object and also contributes to ist art-historical classification as a pasticcio. In addition, it opens up new approaches for further research, particularly concearning the attribution of the painting.
