Zusammenfassung: This master´s thesis investigates the development of reversible, self-adhesive facings for the conservation of mounted wooden objects and paintings. Conventional methods, in which water-soluble adhesives are activated by moisture, harbour risks due to moisture and drying stresses during application. As an alternative, a coating based on the acrylic dispersion Lascaux® 303 HV is being tested, whose low glass transition point (-35 °C) enables pressure-sensitive adhesion without this moisture input. The aim was to develop a coating that can be removed with water or aliphatic hydrocarbons without leaving any residue. Peel tests were used to compare coatings with additives such as MethocelTM A4M, Aquazol®, 500, Lascaux® 498 HV and Evacon-RTM in order to control adhesion and reversibility. Solvent penetration was influenced by selectively disrupting film formation (foaming, dilution).
While water-based removals were only possible to a limited extent, two mixtures with aliphatic hydrocarbons enabled adhesion-free removal of glass, emulsion paint and a painting dummy. The decisive factors here were a broken film structure and adapted adhesion. This work shows that self-adhesive facings could be a promising alternative, but that further research is needed into long-term stability, hygroscopic effects and residues. Adhesion changes in particular should be considered beforehand. The results thus could provide a basis for the further development of stress reduced facings in restoration practice.
